TCJS ‘Young Artists’ Series Features Stillwater Combos Feb. 2

  Now in its second year, the next TCJS “Young Artists” concert will be held Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Artists’ Quarter with an early evening performance featuring two jazz combos from Stillwater Area High School. Directed by Dennis Lindsey, the two combos will split the 75-minute set, featuring the music of Duke Ellington.

  One combo includes Dan Colburn (alto sax), Andy Colburn (piano). Nick Benish (bass) and Evan McClean (drums); the other is Lukah Wesloh (tenor sax), Allie Wilmes (vibes), Austin Williams (bass) and Nick Adams (drums).

TCJS ‘Jazz from J to Z’ Concert: Nathan Hanson’s Saxophone Choir at Roseville Area High School 3/4

  The TCJS “Jazz from J to Z” concert series continues March 4, with a performance by Nathan Hanson’s Saxophone Choir at Roseville Area High School (RAHS). The concert begins in the school auditorium at 7 p.m. with an opening set from the RAHS Jazz Ensemble I.

  Composer/performer Nathan Hanson has been described as “unexpectedly tasteful and dignified” by ImproJazz-France. Over his career, he has performed with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Cecil Taylor, Mark Dresser, Carei Thomas and Douglas Ewart, as well as with current stars Chris Potter, Tony Malaby, Liberty Ellman, Elliot Humberto Kavee and Federico Ughi. A graduate of Newberry College and the University of South Carolina, Hanson worked on the East Coast for many years before returning to his hometown of Minneapolis. In the Twin Cities, he is best known as a member of the Fantastic Merlins, and performs frequently at the Black Dog and other venues. Hanson has served as curator or co-curator of several experimental music series, including the current Community Pool/Deep End series at the Black Dog.

The TCJS is seeking musicians/acts for the 2012/13 "Jazz from J to Z" concert season. Applications will be accepted from January 1 through March 1, 2012. The Twin Cities Jazz Society (TCJS) is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization supported by membership donations, dedicated to promoting jazz music, especially live jazz by local musicians. The Jazz from J to Z Concert Series operates in a variety of venues across the Twin Cities area, including theaters, arts centers, high school and college auditoriums, and clubs.
