Doug Haining and the Twin Cities Seven Featuring Charmin Michelle by Andrea Canter The second concert of the TCJS “Jazz from J to Z” season will be swinging in Hopkins on Oct. 4! Doug Haining and his Twin Cities Seven ensemble will join forces with vocalist Charmin Michelle for “Swing Into Fall,” an evening featuring the music of the great swing era composers. Doug Haining is one of the most swinging of area sax and clarinet players, citing the influence of Johnny Hodges. A graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Haining has been delighting audiences for over three decades, including stints with Steve Allen, Don Rick-les and Bob Hope, playing for such Broadway shows as West Side Story, Cats, and A Chorus Line, and working in famed area bands including Red Wolfe’s Ellington Echoes, the Hall Brothers Band and the Wolverines Classic Jazz Orchestra. |

Andy Heglund and Phil Hey to be featured with the UM Jazz Ensemble I Oct. 16
 Andy Heglund On Oct. 16 jazz fans will have the chance to hear not just one, but two world-class jazz drummers. The University of Minnesota Jazz Ensemble I is proud to present Spring Lake Park native Andy Heglund alongside long-time Twin Cities master and UM jazz faculty member Phil Hey in a special program. Since 1996, Heglund has been in Reno, Nev. where he directs the percussion ensemble and Jazz Big Band 1 at the University of Nevada-Reno. Heglund has performed with jazz artists Lee Konitz, Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson, Bud Shank, Ravi Coltrane, Robin Eubanks, and Fred Hersch. He also performs with the UNR faculty quintet The Collective, the Reno Jazz Orchestra, and the Ed Corey Trio. Heglund has played on three CDs with the Collective (North, Boats, Balance) and one CD with the Ed Corey Trio (Modal Citizen). He also performs with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra and the Discover Music Percussion Ensemble. |

St. Paul, MN. The Twin Cities Jazz Society’s “Jazz From J to Z” series will get underway on September 21st at 7 pm at the Artists Quarter in St. Paul with “Sambanova!,” a special CD release concert featuring two of the Twin Cities most acclaimed performers/composers, guitarist Joan Griffith and pianist Laura Caviani, with percussionist Gary Gauger, recorder master Clea Galhano, and special guest, vocalist Lucia Newell. A noted teacher, composer and performer, Joan Griffith has toured and recorded as a classical and jazz guitarist, bassist and mandolinist. Head of the Jazz Studies Department at the University of St. Thomas, Joan is also a guitar and bass instructor at the College of St. Catherine and director of the MacJazz Workshop at Macalester College. With Lucia Newell, Joan released Enter You, Enter Love, named to the Top Ten list of recordings for 1996 by KBEM radio. |
