The Jane Donahue Education Fund has been created in the spirit of Jane’s dedication to jazz education and promoting local musicians. This special fund was established by the Twin Cities Jazz Society (TCJS) Board of Directors in January with an allocation of $500. The Fund will be used to help provide jazz education experiences for students such as “artist in the schools” programs, master classes and performances; as well as camp/workshop scholarships and performance opportunities for students who couldn’t otherwise afford these opportunities. Contributions in Jane’s memory are welcome and will make it possible for an increasing number of young people to be exposed to jazz and pursue their aspirations as young musicians. Gifts to the TCJS Jane Donahue Education Fund are tax-deductible, and may be made by cash or check. Checks should be made out to TCJS with a notation that the gift is designated for the Jane Donahue Education Fund. Gifts can be mailed to: Twin Cities Jazz Society (TCJS), P.O. Box 4487, St. Paul, MN 55104-0487. Promote the Future of Jazz—Adopt a Student Member of TCJS The TCJS Board is seeking ways to promote jazz among students. Member-ship in TCJS is one way that students can learn more about jazz and about opportunities to play, listen and learn. There are hundreds of students in Minnesota who participate in school and community jazz bands, jazz camps and student festivals each year, but only a small number take advantage of student membership in TCJS. We’re convinced that one sure way to encourage student interest in jazz and TCJS is to given them a chance to enjoy TCJS membership benefits such as “Jazz Notes,” “Coda,” and discounted tickets to our “J to Z” concert series. We are therefore initiating an Adopt a Student program - simply; a regular member of TCJS donates a one-year $10 student membership to an eligible student. (Student members are enrolled in K-12 schools or registered in undergraduate college programs.) You can donate on behalf of a specific student you name or ask TCJS to find an interested student. We’ll be in touch with local band directors to find someone for “adoption.” The students will receive electronic editions of “Jazz Notes” and “Coda” and all other membership benefits. We’re hoping that after a year of membership, the students will want to continue on their own. $10 is a small investment in the future of jazz and the future of TCJS! If interested in adopting a student, please send $10 (check) to TCJS and note “Adopt a Student” on the memo line. To donate on behalf of a specific student, include a note with the student’s name, mailing address and, if known, e-mail address and we will notify him or her of your “adoption.” If you do not name a student, we will find one and notify you! -Andrea Canter |
