Twin Cities Jazz Society Announces “Jazz from J to Z” Concert Series 2008-09 Print E-mail

The Twin Cities Jazz Society announces its exciting 2008-09 “Jazz from J to Z” concert series with 10 concerts presented by a an exceptionable selection of musicians, vocalists, and jazz groups. The “J to Z” mission has been to increase listening opportunities for jazz fans, to enhance performance opportunities for local jazz musicians, and to help promote public awareness of jazz.

Last season’s “Jazz from J to Z” concert series had a total audience of 5,150, who heard 15 different concerts featuring over 200 musicians. This season contains offerings in a variety of styles including:  mainstream/straight ahead, vocal, big band, swing, bebop, Brazilian, traditional jazz, and “Tributes to the Greats.

This “J to Z” season’s first concert will be held Sept. 21, at the Artists’ Quarter in St. Paul, with “Sambanova!,” a concert/CD release celebration of new Brazilian inspired music played by Joan Griffith and Laura Caviani. The duo will be accompanied by Gary Gauger on percussion, Clea Galhano on recorder, and special guest Lucia Newell on vocals. “Sambanova” is also the title of the new CD of this music, which contains originals by Joan Griffith and Brazilian standards.

TCJS presents the swinging sounds of Doug Haining and the Twin Cities Seven and vocalist Charmin Michelle Oct. 4 at the Hopkins Center For Arts. On Oct. 16, a fall favorite returns with the TCJS annual concert by the University of Minnesota Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Dean Sorenson, at Ted Mann Concert Hall in Minneapolis. The show, “Two Drum Heads Are Better Than One,” will feature drummers Andy Heglund and Phil Hey.

The TCJS will partner with the MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis on two concerts for its popular “Jazz Thursday’s” series: Nov. 6, Bells and Whistles, featuring saxophonist Chris Thomson, and Bryan Nichols on piano, Adam Linz on bass and Alden Ikeda on drums; and the April 16 concert will feature the Out to Lunch Quintet, featuring Dave Milne on woodwinds, Kelly Rossum on trumpet, Dave hagedorn on vibes, TOm Lewis on bass, and Phil Hey on drums.  
  
To highlight the holiday season the Bloomington Center for The Arts will co-host “Bing and the Andrews Sisters,” featuring Kathy Mueller, Lisa Pallen, Aimee Fischer, and Arne Fogel in a showcase of great jazz hits, swing anthems, and holiday favorites delivered in the style made famous by the biggest singing stars of the 1940s.

The Jack Brass Band, a Twin Cities incarnation of the traditional New Orleans Brass Band, perform Jan. 11 at The Times Bar and Café in Minneapolis.

An exciting new concert venue for the Twin Cities, the Burnsville Performing Arts Center, will present “Sisters in Song: A Tribute to Carmen, Sarah, and Ella” on Feb. 28. The show features three top jazz vocalists: Vicky Mountain, Dorothy Doring, and Lila Ammons.

 “J to Z” returns to  the Bloomington Center for the Arts on March 22 featuring Tanner Taylor in a “Tribute to Oscar Peterson.” Taylor hosts this concert with his own hard-swinging trio and special guest Dave Karr.

The TCJS “Jazz from J to Z” concert series concludes with “Swing Into Spring,” by the Century Jazz Ensemble, on May 17 at Century College in White Bear Lake.
