Andy Heglund and Phil Hey to be featured with the UM Jazz Ensemble I Oct. 16

On Oct. 16 jazz fans will have the chance to hear not just one, but  two world-class jazz drummers. The University of Minnesota Jazz Ensemble I is proud to present Spring Lake Park native Andy Heglund alongside long-time Twin Cities master and UM jazz faculty member Phil Hey in a special program.

Since 1996, Heglund has been in Reno, Nev. where he directs the percussion ensemble and Jazz Big Band 1 at the University of Nevada-Reno. Heglund has performed with jazz artists Lee Konitz, Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson, Bud Shank, Ravi Coltrane, Robin Eubanks, and Fred Hersch. He also performs with the UNR faculty quintet The Collective, the Reno Jazz Orchestra, and the Ed Corey Trio. Heglund has played on three CDs with the Collective (North, Boats, Balance) and one CD with the Ed Corey Trio (Modal Citizen). He also performs with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra and the Discover Music Percussion Ensemble.

 Phil Hey is no stranger to Twin Cities jazz fans. He is first call to back up national artists at clubs like the Artists’ Quarter and at the Dakota Jazz Club. In addition to working with virtually every active Twin Cities jazz musician, Hey has hit the road with internationally known artists like Benny Golson, Dewey Redman, Jay McShann and Stacey Kent. As a recording artist, Hey has released his own CD, Subduction, and has appeared on over 60 albums as sideman including Von Freeman Live at the Dakota and the Pete Whitman's X-Tet's Where's When?, both of which received the “four star” treatment from Downbeat magazine. He is a member of the jazz studies faculty of the University of Minnesota where he conducts Jazz Ensemble II, the jazz combos, and gives lessons in drum set.

Dean Sorenson
Dean Sorenson, University of Minnesota School of Music Director of Jazz Studies, leads the U of M School of Music Jazz Ensembles, which plays a wide variety of big band repertoire and perform for many events both on and off campus. Sorenson is a prolific and  highly sought-after composer, arranger, trombonist, educator, and clinician. He received his bachelor’s degree in trombone performance from the University of Minnesota and his master’s degree in jazz arranging and composition from the Eastman School of Music. Sorenson is the co-author of the highly successful Standard of Excellence Jazz Ensemble Method, an innovative and comprehensive method book for young jazz ensembles. The highly anticipated follow-up book, Standard of Excellence Advanced Jazz Ensemble Method, was released to rave reviews and continues the solid, practical techniques introduced in the first book. He is also the author of Standard of Excellence Jazz Combo Session, and composer of numerous pieces for concert band and jazz ensemble published by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company.


Co-presented by TCJS as a “Jazz from J to Z” concert, “Two Drum Heads are Better Than One” will roll off at 7:30 p.m. at the Ted Mann Concert Hall at the University of Minnesota (2128 4th Street South, Minneapolis). Admission is free. FFI, please call (612) 624-2334.
