![]() Conrad Herwig The JazzMN Big Band, the premier Jazz Orchestra of MN, kicks off their 10th Anniversary Concert Series on Saturday, October 18, at 7:30 PM, at the Hopkins’s High School Performing Arts Center. The show is titled “The Latin Side of Conrad Herwig”, featuring their guest artist, trombonist extraordinaire Conrad Herwig from NYC. The first set of all the JazzMN Big Band concerts feature the band, comprised of some of the finest jazz musicians in town. Their set will contain charts from the libraries of the Buddy Rich Big Band, the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and Bob Florence’s Limited Edition Big Band. The featured vocalist in the first set will be the wonderful Charmin Michelle.
The second set will feature Grammy Nominated Conrad Herwig, who started his career at the University of North Texas. He began his professional career with the Clark Terry Big Band, followed by stints with the Big Bands of Buddy Rich, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Mel Lewis, & Quincy Jones. Conrad has also played with the Mingus Big Band, Slide Hampton’s World of Trombones, and Maro Bauza’s Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra.
Conrad Herwig has recorded 16 CDs as a leader or co-leader. Three of his latest have taken an Afro Cuban Latin flair, and have received rave reviews. He has taken a number of his Latin tunes and has arranged them for Big Band, and you’ll hear some of them at the JazzMN concert on October 18. Conrad has recorded about 150 CDs as a sideman in NYC, and currently he is professor of Jazz Trombone at Rutgers University. He is one of the most in demand jazz educator and clinician in the US.
