The Twin Cities Jazz Society (TCJS) celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2009! To honor this occasion TCJS will hold a special gala celebrating “30 Years of Jazz” on Feb. 8 at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. Following, three members share their memories of when they joined the TCJS Board of Directors. —Starla Barker, Jazz Notes Editor ‘TCJS Kick-off Event Attracts 2,200 Fans!’ by Jane Donahue What a wonderful-sounding event to report to our current jazz fans. No such luck! It occurred on February 20, 1979, and successfully launched the Twin Cities Jazz Society on a jazz adventure. As reported in an article in the first issue of Jazz Notes, in April, 1979, “2,200 jazz fans packed the Prom Center (on University Avenue in St. Paul) for a free public concert and membership drive.” 30 years later, we’re still viable, and ready to celebrate our 30th anniversary. I’m proud of the terrific start TCJS received at that kick-off event, and equally appreciative of our current roster of 989 members, made up of a mixture of jazz fans, from new to those who joined at that first event and all the rest in between. |

The 2010 Twin Cities Jazz Festival will take place June 17, 18 and 19 in Lowertown St. Paul with free concerts at Mears Park (off 6th Street and Sibley) on two stages (Main Stage and 6th Street Stage), and at the Youth Stage at Cray Plaza. More Festival concerts will be held at participating clubs and venues (cover charges may apply). The Festival will kick off Thursday, June 17 with the return of the popular Jazz Night Out Club Crawl featuring live music in a number of downtown St. Paul clubs, and a concert at Mears Park. The juried exhibit showcase Visual Jazz, celebrating art inspired by jazz, will once again be on view during the Twin Cities Jazz Festival at the Artist Mercantile, located in the Hamm building above the Artists’ Quarter. The Visual Jazz display will begin June 14 and continue through July 3. The opening reception/party will be held June 17 (6 to 9 p.m.), during Jazz Night Out. The Twin Cities Jazz Society announces its 2009-2010 season of concerts. Ten events celebrating the wide range of the jazz genre are scheduled at venues throughout the metro area, from September to May. Small ensembles and big bands, instrumentalists and vocalists will celebrate jazz legends Lester Young and Thelonious Monk, the great songs of the 1930s, and the 60th anniversary of Birdland. Performers will include nationally renowned drummer Butch Miles; familiar area musicians like Mary Louise Knutson, Laura Caviani, Judi Donaghy, Charmin Michelle, Debbie Duncan, Bruce Henry, Lee Engele, Zacc Harris, Joel Shapira, Dick Bortolussi, Route Three, and the Jazz Ax Saxophone Quartet; up and coming ensembles like the Bella Gala Big Band, Monk in Motian and Pooch’s Playhouse; and rising and future stars like Katie Gearty, Nancy Harms, Rachel Holder and the musicians of the University of Minnesota Jazz Ensemble.  Mary Louise Knutson©Andrea Canter Among the top echelon of a rich pool of Twin Cities’ pianists, Mary Louise Knutson is highly respected for her commitment to composition and teaching as well as her broad range of performance skills. A modern mainstream artist who celebrates melody without being confined by it, Mary Louise was one of five finalists in the first-ever Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Piano Competition, held at Kennedy Center in 2005. On Feb. 28, at 2 p.m., Mary Louise and her acclaimed trio (bassist Chris Bates and drummer Jay Epstein) join forces with special guest, violinist Randy Sabien, for a “Spotlight on Melody” at the Bloomington Center for the Arts, co-presented by the Twin Cities Jazz Society as a “Jazz from J to Z” concert. |

On December 15, 1949, a jazz club opened on Broadway in midtown Manhattan, just a few doors away from the hotbed of jazz in the 40s, 52nd Street. Recognizing the significance of Birdland to the survival of modern jazz, the Twin Cities Jazz Society will celebrate the club’s 60th anniversary with its December 20th (2 pm) Jazz From J to Z concert, “Tribute to Birdland,” at the Bloomington Center for the Arts. Birdland’s first headliner was Charlie Parker; J to Z will feature an esteem cast with local ties, singers Debbie Duncan, Lee Engele and Bruce Henry, along with pianist Tanner Taylor, bassist Chris Bates, drummer Jay Epstein, and saxophonist Brandon Wozniak. |
