In 2006, five of the most creative jazzers in the Midwest banded together to release The Out to Lunch Quintet: Live at the Artists Quarter. Produced by Don Berryman (Jazz Police ), the recording took the seminal 1964 work of saxophonist Eric Dolphy and presented it with a 21st century glow. Now, the Out to Lunch Quintet reunites for an exciting evening at the MacPhail Center for Music on April 16th as part its Jazzed Thursdays series, cosponsored by the Twin Cities Jazz Society as part of the Jazz From J to Z season.

Eric Dolphy was a masterful composer, arranger and performer on multiple reeds. A favorite of Mingus and Coltrane, he was perhaps best known as the composer of avant-garde compositions using odd time signatures further pushed outside by his dissonant and unpredictable blowing style. Yet, Dolphy is not a popular icon of modern jazz, perhaps because musicians find his compositions difficult to play and because audiences find the music challenging to hear. But always up for a challenge, vibraphonist and St. Olaf instructor Dave Hagedorn brought a Dolphy chart to a performance at the Artists Quarter in early 2005. In the audience, Berryman was intrigued by sound of “Hat and Beard” (a favorite since his college days) and suggested that the entire Out to Lunch set would make an exciting performance, leading to a concert at St. Olaf (“Still Out to Lunch”) sponsored by the Twin Cities Jazz Society the following winter.

Three years ago, Twin Cities singers joined together for a trio number as part of a Jazz Vocalists of Minnesota “Singers Showcase” event. A year later, Lila Ammons, Dorothy Doring and Vicky Mountain decided to expand on the fun and inspiration of that night and brought their “Sisters in Song” to the Dakota County Music Café in Burnsville. As part of the “Jazz from J to Z” series, the Twin Cities Jazz Society will present “Sisters in Song” March 29 at 3 p.m. at the Black Box Theater of the Bloomington Center for the Arts. Performing signature tunes of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae, they’ll be supported by an ensemble of accomplished Twin Cities’ musicians, Phil Aaron (piano), Jocko McNelly (bass) and Reid Kennedy (drums).

An unlikely wellspring for great jazz artists, Iowa claims such legends as Bix Beiderbecke, Glenn Miller, and Charlie Haden, as well as young trumpet master, Ryan Kisor. Add to that “young lion” pool pianist Tanner Taylor, whose move to the Twin Cities in 2001 gave us one more reason to gloat at our neighbors to the south. On March 22 at 2 p.m., Taylor will pay tribute to one of his primary muses, the late great Oscar Peterson, appearing at the Bloomington Center for the Arts as part of the Twin Cities Jazz Society’s “Jazz from J to Z” concert series. He’ll be joined by a hard swinging trio including bassist Graydon Peterson and drummer Mac Santiago, along with special guest, saxophonist Dave Karr. Radio personality and vocalist Arne Fogel will serve as emcee.
