‘Music of Bob Brookmeyer’ University of Minnesota Jazz Ensemble I Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Dean Sorenson at the University of Minnesota, is honored to present a concert featuring the music of Bob Brookmeyer. A highly creative voice in jazz as both a trombone master and writer over his 60-year career, Brookmeyer also taught many of today’s leading jazz composers, including Maria Schneider and Jim McNeely. He is a walking history of jazz, having performed with, and written for, a list of legends that includes Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Jim Hall, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Count Basie and Woody Herman, among many others. The concert, a part of the TCJS “Jazz from J to Z” series, will be held at Ted Mann Concert Hall on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota campus on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. This concert will focus primarily on recent works, many of which have been recorded with Brookmeyer’s New Art Orchestra on two CDs. Waltzing With Zoe was recorded in 2001 on the Challenge label. One of the featured works on this record is “For Maria,” a gorgeous ballad dedicated to Minnesota native composer, Maria Schneider. Schneider studied with Bob Brookmeyer when she first moved to New York and the two remain friends and colleagues. Another featured composition, “King Porter ‘94”, is a reconstruction of the classic hit, “King Porter Stomp.” Both of these works will be featured on Oct. 14, as well as some pieces from the more recent New Art Orchestra recording, Spirit Music (2006). Brookmeyer was a frequent contributor to the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis book, and the concert will feature three pieces from that repertoire, “Skylark,” “Samba Con Getchu,” and “The American Express.” The second J to Z concert featuring the University of Minnesota Jazz Ensemble I will be held at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 14 at the Ted Mann Concert Hall.
