Jazz From J to Z: 2009-2010 Print E-mail

The Twin Cities Jazz Society announces its 2009-2010 season of concerts. Ten events celebrating the wide range of the jazz genre are scheduled at venues throughout the metro area, from September to May. Small ensembles and big bands, instrumentalists and vocalists will celebrate jazz legends Lester Young and Thelonious Monk, the great songs of the 1930s, and the 60th anniversary of Birdland. Performers will include nationally renowned drummer Butch Miles; familiar area musicians like Mary Louise Knutson, Laura Caviani, Judi Donaghy, Charmin Michelle, Debbie Duncan, Bruce Henry, Lee Engele, Zacc Harris, Joel Shapira, Dick Bortolussi, Route Three, and the Jazz Ax Saxophone Quartet; up and coming ensembles like the Bella Gala Big Band, Monk in Motian and Pooch’s Playhouse; and rising and future stars like Katie Gearty, Nancy Harms, Rachel Holder and the musicians of the University of Minnesota Jazz Ensemble.

  •  September 27, 3 pm at the Capri Theater (Minneapolis), Tribute to Lester Young with the Jazz Ax Saxophone Quartet (Dave Milne, Mike Walk, Pete Whitman, Greg Keel ), The Laura Caviani Trio (with Gordy Johnson and Phil Hey), and Charmin Michelle
  • October 8, 7 pm at Stillwater High School, Butch Miles and the St. Croix Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dennis Lindsay  with Judi Donaghy
  • October 15, 7:30 pm at the Ted Mann Auditorium (University of Minnesota West Bank), U of M Jazz Ensemble led by Dean Sorenson (free)
  • November 8, 7 pm at the Artists Quarter (St. Paul), Monk in Motian (Zaac Harris, Park Evans, Brandon Wozniak, Scott Fultz, Matt Peterson, Pete Hennig)
  • December 20, 2 pm at the Bloomington Center for the Arts, 60th Anniversary of Birdland with Debbie Duncan, Lee Engele and Bruce Henry
  • January 24, 3 pm at the Bloomington Center for the Arts Black Box Theater, Route 3: On the Sunnyside of the Street—Uplifting Songs From the 1930s, featuring with Teri Parker-Brown, LeRoy Brown and Ralph Hepola, with guest Dick Bortolussi
  • February 28, 2 pm, at the Bloomington Center for the Arts, Spotlight on Melody with the Mary Louise Knutson Trio
  • March 21, 7 pm at the Artists Quarter (St. Paul), Pooch’s Playhouse (Joel Shapira, Bruce “Pooch” Heine, Mark Asche, Dave Brattain and Dave Schmalenberger)
  • April 25, 3 pm at the Capri Theater (Minneapolis), “Blue” (songs on the indigo side) with Katie Gearty, Nancy Harms and Rachel Holder
  • May 8, 7:30 pm at the Hopkins Center for the Arts, Bellagala Big Band.
