Doctor visits

Doctor visits are when you visit a clinic to see a doctor or specialist consultant about a medical condition.

The information on this page refers to health insurance policies starting in 2025. If you live in the UAE, please check out our information on doctors visits in the UAE.

What is a doctor visit?Settle your medical bill directly with the hospital or doctor providing treatment

A doctor visit is consultation you have with a doctor or specialist.

Doctor visits are different from treatment you receive in hospital: you visit a doctor as an outpatient, whereas you receive hospital treatment once you’re admitted as an inpatient or daypatient.

We have a guide that goes into more detail about the differences between outpatient and inpatient treatment.

Doctors visits can be in person (i.e. you have an appointment at a clinic or surgery) or over a telephone or video call.

Key takeaways

  • Doctor visits are when you have a consultation with a doctor or consultant. It’s also a catch-all term for outpatient treatment
  • The Silver and Gold plans give you full cover for outpatient treatment
  • The SilverLite plan gives you restricted  cover for outpatient treatment, and the Bronze plan gives you cover only following your discharge from hospital
What Sharon, our medical expert, says
“International health insurance isn’t just for serious health issues – it’s also there for when you need to visit the local doctor’s surgery or pharmacy”

What is covered?

We cover the following types of doctor visits and related treatment:

  • Consultations – We cover consultations you have with a doctor or specialist. We cover consultations you have in person at a clinic or surgery, but we also cover virtual consultations you receive over the phone or video link. If you’re in the UK, most primary care is provided for free by general practitioners (GPs) on the NHS. We cover consultations with private GPs, which are increasingly popular.
  • Prescription drugs – We cover all prescription drugs and pharmacy costs that are prescribed by a doctor or specialist. We don’t cover medication and drugs that you can buy over the counter or without a prescription (e.g., paracetamol, ibuprofen).
  • Pathology – We cover pathology, which is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis of Illness. In practical terms, this means imaging tests, biopsies, and investigations that a doctor undertakes to work out what is wrong with you.
  • Radiology, scans, and imaging tests – We cover investigations such as x-rays and blood tests to diagnose the cause of your symptoms. We also cover advanced imaging tests such as MRI and CAT (CT) scans, if they’re performed on the advice of a doctor. We cover PET scans only on the advice of a specialist.
  • Physiotherapy – We cover physiotherapy when a doctor has referred you. The physiotherapy must be medically necessary and performed by a registered physiotherapist.

  • COVID-19 – We cover PCR and Antigen testing for COVID-19 when you have symptoms of, or you’ve been in close contact with someone who’s tested positive for, COVID-19. The tests must be prescribed by a doctor and undertaken under medical supervision.
  • Hormone replacement therapy – We cover hormone replacement therapy when prescribed by a doctor after your diagnosis with premature ovarian failure. You have cover for 12 months after diagnosis on the Silver plan, and for 18 months after diagnosis on the Gold plan.

More frequently asked questions on international health insurance

Yes, if you have an excess on your policy.

More about excesses and how they work

No, we do not cover home visits by a doctor.

Global health insurance (also known as international private medical insurance) gives you access to private healthcare around the world.

While most domestic health plans only cover you in one country, international health plans cover you in multiple (or even all) countries. They’re great for people who live and work abroad, or who spend lots of time travelling. Some international medical plans also include emergency medical evacuation cover so you can access urgent treatment even if it’s not available in your location.
