Personal accident cover

Accidents can happen anywhere, any time. Personal accident insurance protects you and your family in the event of accidental injury or death. Find out how a personal accident plan can help.

What is international personal accident insurance?

International personal accident insurance is a type of insurance policy that pays a lump-sum in compensation should you suffer bodily injury or death as a result of an accident happening.

It is designed for expats who live abroad so that they are covered wherever they are in the world.

Personal accident insurance can provide a safety net for you and your loved ones in the aftermath of a serious accident.

For example, if you should find yourself unable to work and provide for your family as a result of an accident, you and your loved ones can be secure in the knowledge your family’s standard of living can be maintained and that debts such as a mortgage can be paid.

Why is private personal accident care so important for expats?

Accidents come in all shapes and sizes, and for families living abroad, the consequences can be disastrous. Living in a country where you are unfamiliar with the culture, language, and infrastructure can increase the risk of accidents.

For example, if you have an accident at work, a road traffic accident, a slip, trip or fall, or an accident resulting in permanent disability or the loss of body parts, you will be covered if you have personal accident insurance. Similarly, you will also be covered if you’re injured or killed in a terror attack, or any other form of criminal activity in which you’re a victim.

What Sharon, our medical expert, says
“The optional personal accident plan is available with all health plans. It’s a great way to increase the cover provided by your health plan without breaking the bank.”

What personal accident cover do I get with William Russell?

At William Russell, your personal accident benefit will become payable when an accident occurring during your policy year results in one or more of the following occurrences within two years of the date of the accident:

  • Your death
  • The total and irrecoverable loss of sight in one of your eyes
  • The total and irrecoverable loss of sight in both of your eyes
  • The loss of or the loss of use of one of your limbs
  • The loss of or the loss of use of two of your limbs
  • The total and irrecoverable loss of the sight of one of your eyes and one limb
  • Your permanent total disablement (other than the total loss of sight of one or both eyes or the loss of one or more limbs)

Are there any exclusions for personal accident cover?

There are certain situations that won’t be covered by personal accident insurance:

  • In the case of road traffic accidents, exclusions apply where injuries result from a failure to follow local laws, such as: travelling in a motorised vehicle as a driver or passenger where the driver does not have a valid license and insurance; driving while intoxicated on drugs or alcohol, as deemed by local laws regulating breath and blood alcohol or other drug content; and road traffic accidents where the injured person failed to wear the right safety equipment (including, but not limited to helmets and seatbelts) may also be excluded.
  • We don’t cover for accidental death if your death results from war, warlike activities, military action, acts of foreign hostilities (whether or not war is declared), civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, usurped power, mutiny, riot, strike, martial law, state of siege, attempted overthrow of government, any acts of terrorism, murder, attempted murder, kidnap (including attempted kidnap or attempted rescue from kidnapping), or assault of any kind (irrespective of whether the insured person is an active participant in any of the above activities or merely an innocent bystander).
  • Suicide, or injuries suffered through attempted suicide are also excluded from claims, along with any intentionally self-inflicted injuries, including those related to substance abuse such as alcohol or drug addictions.
  • You are not covered for accidents that take place while participating in hazardous activities such as some sporting activities, unless that activity is specifically outlined in the limits of your personal policy.

For a full list of exclusions, please read the personal accident plan agreement (Personal Plans > Plan Agreements > Plan Agreement (Personal Accident).

Notes on personal accident cover

All the benefits on this webpage are per member per policy year, unless we state otherwise. We show the benefit limits in US dollars, but we can also denominate your policy in pounds sterling or Euros. You won’t find complete information for our plans on this webpage, nor the full T&Cs, limitations, and exclusions that would apply if you purchase a health insurance policy. You can find complete information in the plan agreement, which we suggest you read together with this webpage. We work hard to ensure the information we provide on this webpage is accurate and up-to-date, but inaccuracies are possible. We rectify errors as soon as we become aware of them. The T&Cs that apply to your policy are those found in your plan agreement.
