Our international health insurance plans provide worldwide cover, meaning that digital nomads are covered wherever they go.

Digital nomad health insurance, also known as international health insurance, provides healthcare cover for people who are able to work from anywhere around the world.
The digital nomad lifestyle has become widely accepted across various industries with over 50 countries now offering digital nomad visas for individual expats who want to work while they travel.
But whilst this way of life sounds exciting, the idea of falling ill or injured overseas will likely be far more stressful if you’re alone. That’s where international health insurance comes in. It provides access to quality, round-the-clock healthcare that brings security and peace of mind.
International health insurance is ideal for digital nomads because it provides health cover globally. This makes it better suited than traditional health insurance policies which usually tie you to one specific country. As well as that, some traditional health insurance policies may also require you to pay tax in your resident country to qualify.
Whether you’re a professional living or working abroad, or you travel a lot on your own, international health insurance can take care of your medical and healthcare needs.
You should be aware of which type of healthcare system your new country uses, remembering there are four main healthcare systems worldwide. In countries that rely on private (‘out-of-pocket’) healthcare, taking insurance might save you money on future medical care.
Our health plans for digital nomads are flexible and personalised so you can trust in your cover wherever your travels take you, plus we provide cover in over 150 countries. With our specialised digital nomad cover, you’ll have access to over 40,000 hospitals and clinics around the world.
We have four standard health plans to choose from; Bronze, SilverLite, Silver and Gold. Some plans are more comprehensive than others, each with different benefits, annual limits and conditions. Our plans are designed to give you the flexibility to choose the level of cover that you need within your budget.
However, all of our plans have the following essential benefits:
Inpatient medical treatment at a top-rated hospital or medical clinic of your choosing
Learn More
Cover for cancer treatment, including cover for cancer genome testing
Cover for post-hospital doctor visits, specialist consultations, and diagnostic tests
Evacuation for treatment of emergency life or limb-threatening conditions when not available locally
Now that we’ve covered the basics, here’s a full breakdown of what is and what isn’t covered in each of our health plans for digital nomads:
Bronze
SilverLite
Silver
Gold
Certain benefits in this table of benefits specify a waiting period. You must be covered by the same plan for the full duration of the specified waiting period before you can claim for that benefit. No benefit is payable for any treatment costs incurred during the waiting period.
Most insurance providers don’t cover pre-existing medical conditions or related conditions, so check before you decide on a provider.
*Cover is limited to post-hospital care.
The cost of expat health insurance for digital nomads can vary depending on the country (or countries) you want to travel to, and your level of cover. International health insurance is generally more expensive than a local health plan, however it gives you more coverage and the added assurance that you’re getting the best possible care.
This is particularly valuable for digital nomads, because it means your health insurance will cover you in multiple countries and include emergency medical evacuation. To calculate your premium, we also look at factors including your age and where you live or work.
Here’s an example monthly premium based on a 30-year-old man living and working in Spain, with a US$250 per annum excess and Zone 1 cover.

A digital nomad is someone who chooses to take their work remote while they travel to different countries.
As a digital nomad, you might be employed by an international company, have a remote working agreement with your UK based company, or be self-employed.
Digital nomad visas are making the dream of living and working abroad all the more possible, with 28 countries now offering visas to individual expats.
As of March 2022, there are 28 countries already offering digital nomad visas.
These allow individual expats to live and work in the country for a set period of time.
Countries with the longest stay period include:
*Digital nomad visas in Spain are renewable
Expats are people who relocate to another country for work or retirement. Expats can be of any age, from children who have moved abroad with their families, to retirees.
A digital nomad is similar to an expat, in that they both leave their home country to work abroad. However, while expats may be expected to work on-site for a particular company, digital nomads work entirely remotely, and are often freelancers. This enables them to travel from country to country while working.
Yes, it can do. Healthcare plans from William Russell are international, so your cover doesn’t need to stop if you travel abroad or return home temporarily, provided this is within your cover zone.
If you return home permanently, we can offer cover in your home country. Please note the cover is not available to you if the USA, Iran, Libya, North Korea, South Sudan, Syria or Yemen is or becomes your country of residence, irrespective of your nationality.
It is in some destinations, so make sure you check. Before you travel, it’s also a good idea to research the public healthcare. Look at the quality and availability of medical care, for both illness and accidents, and what the eligibility criteria are for accessing it. For extra coverage and peace of mind, you may decide to arrange expat health insurance for you and your family.
Our plans are divided into 6 zones:
Zone 1
Worldwide cover, with restricted cover in the USA.
Zone 2
Provides cover in most countries. But in countries where the cost of private health insurance is high, this is subject to certain limits. There is no cover in the USA.
Zone 3
Special coverage zone for residents in Indonesia only, with restricted cover where private healthcare is expensive but no cover in the USA.
Zone 4
Full cover in Africa & Indian Subcontinent, with restricted cover elsewhere but no cover in the USA.
Zone 5
Full cover in Africa (except South Africa) & Indian Subcontinent, with restricted cover elsewhere but no cover in the USA.
Zone 6
Worldwide cover, excluding the USA, with restricted cover in certain countries and regions. Only available for residents in Indonesia.
Zone 7
Full cover in South East Asia (except Thailand and Singapore), and no cover elsewhere.
Your healthcare plan is limited to a certain Zone. If you choose to travel to a country outside of this Zone then you will need to amend your insurance plan.
You should always let us know if you’re planning to move countries even if your destination is covered by your current plan.
All William Russell plans come with some cover for emergency dental treatment following an accident, and you may be able to add more depending on what plan you choose.

If you’re lucky enough to spend at least six months of the year living, travelling or working outside your home country, you can usually apply for international health insurance with us.
We are also able to offer plans to nationals of Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius and Nigeria who are resident in their home country and also to Estonian nationals.
Purchasing an international health insurance plan can have several benefits over a travel insurance policy. You’ll have cover for:
All the benefits on this webpage are per member per policy year, unless we state otherwise. We show the benefit limits in US dollars, but we can also denominate your policy in pounds sterling or Euros. You won’t find complete information for our plans on this webpage, nor the full T&Cs, limitations, and exclusions that would apply if you purchase a health insurance policy. You can find complete information in the plan agreement, which we suggest you read together with this webpage. We work hard to ensure the information we provide on this webpage is accurate and up-to-date, but inaccuracies are possible. We rectify errors as soon as we become aware of them. The T&Cs that apply to your policy are those found in your plan agreement.
