What is the hospital cash benefit?

The hospital cash benefit is a standard feature on all our health insurance plans. We’ll pay you the cash benefit if you receive treatment that requires you to spend a night in hospital, but the hospital doesn’t charge us for your treatment and accommodation.

But why would a hospital not charge us, your health insurance provider, for your treatment and your hospital accommodation? It might be that you present for treatment at a public hospital and you’re eligible for free healthcare. For example, you receive treatment at a NHS hospital in the UK, or you present for emergency ante-natal care at a public hospital in Spain. It might also be because you have alternative health insurance cover, and you claim for the cost of treatment and accommodation from an insurance provider that isn’t William Russell.

Some other important notes about the cash benefit:

  • We only pay you the cash benefit if the treatment you receive is eligible for cover by your plan.
  • We pay you the cash benefit for each night you spend in hospital, up to a total of 60 nights each policy year.
  • We don’t apply your excess to the cash benefit.
