Hazardous sports and activities

Some sports and activities increase your risk of accident or injury. We may be able to provide you with insurance cover on standard terms, or with a premium loading or an exclusion. It depends on the insurance you’re applying for, the sports and activities you undertake, and your level of participation. We consider each application on a case-by-case basis.

List of hazardous sports and activities for which you have no cover

Below is a list of hazardous sports and activities that you must disclose when you apply for an insurance policy. The list isn’t comprehensive. You should tell us about any hazardous activities or sports in which you participate that place you in a similar (or higher) degree of danger to those featuring on the list.

If you’re unsure whether you should tell us about a sport or activity, we encourage you to let us know in your application.

Your application

Like other insurance providers, we ask about your participation in hazardous sports and activities when you apply for an insurance policy. Our application form gives some common examples of hazardous activities (e.g., off-piste skiing/snowboarding, freestyle skiing/snowboarding, scuba diving, rock climbing, mountaineering, potholing or caving, hang-gliding, parachuting).

These are just some of the most common examples. You must let us know about any other sport or activity that places you in a similar (or higher) degree of danger to the common examples we provide. The number of hazardous sports and activities is always growing!

Here are some factors we consider when we look at your application:

  • What is the sport or activity in which you’re participating?
  • Where does the sport or activity take place? If you’re rock climbing, are you climbing at an indoor climbing centre? Or are you climbing in the wild? To what height are you climbing? If you’re diving, what type of diving and to what depths are you diving?
  • Are you participating in the sport or activity alone, or as part of a group?
  • What is the frequency or duration of your participation?
  • Are you a member of a recognised professional body
  • What is your age and experience level?

The more information you can provide us about your participation in hazardous sports and activities, the better we can assess your application and the clearer we can be on what your policy will cover.

The additional risk associated with certain hazardous sports or activities may result in a premium loading. Alternatively, we may add exclusions to your participation in hazardous sports or activities. If we do this, we will clearly detail your exclusions in your acceptance invitation and certificate of insurance (if you purchase the policy).

What should I do if I have questions?

If you have any questions or concerns about hazardous sports or activities, and how they affect your insurance cover, please email contact@william-russell.com.
