What is cashless access to outpatient treatment?

When you have health insurance that covers outpatient treatment, your insurer pays your medical bills for things like doctor visits and specialist consultations. This can happen in two ways:

  1. You pay your bills, then you claim back what you paid from your insurer (known as ‘pay-and-claim’ or ‘reimbursement’)
  2. Your insurer pays the treating clinic directly, and you pay only your excess

This last way—when the insurer pays the clinic directly for your outpatient treatment—is called ‘cashless access’. It means you won’t be out of pocket for your treatment costs. You can choose to add cashless access to outpatient treatment when you apply for a policy.
