Critical illness is an optional benefit that provides a lump sum if you or your child are diagnosed with a defined specified medical condition.

This financial support helps cover essential costs, giving you the freedom to focus on recovery rather than worrying about expenses.

Why is critical illness insurance so important for expats?

Living and working abroad comes with unique challenges—especially when faced with a serious illness. Critical illness insurance helps protect your financial stability, no matter where you are in the world.

  • Covers major medical conditions such as cancer, heart attack, and strokes
  • Provides global security, ensuring you’re supported even outside your home country
  • Eases the financial strain of medical treatment, lost income, and necessary lifestyle adjustments
  • Gives peace of mind, allowing you to focus on your health and recovery

What’s the difference between adult and child critical illness insurance?

Critical illness can affect anyone, at any stage of life. That’s why we offer separate optional benefits for both adults and children, ensuring the right level of protection for you and your family.

You must have a life insurance policy with us before you can add critical illness insurance. Critical illness is an optional benefit designed to work alongside your life insurance policy, giving you even greater peace of mind.

Adult critical illness

  • Adult critical illness insurance provides financial support if you are diagnosed with a serious illness, helping you manage medical costs, lost income, or lifestyle adjustments. You can select your benefit in multiples of US$10,000 to a maximum of US$100,000, as long as the limit is not higher than 50% of your life insurance benefit.

Child critical illness

  • Child critical illness insurance can only be added to your policy if you have also selected adult critical illness insurance. If your child is diagnosed with a specified medical condition, we’ll pay a lump sum of US$5,000. This benefit gives you financial breathing room to focus your time fully on their care and well-being. It can help towards expenses such as time off work and medical costs, allowing you to look after your child.

These flexible benefit add-ons allow you to tailor your coverage to your needs. Whether you’re securing your own future, protecting your family, or both, they offer peace of mind when it matters most.

Sharon Clarkson, Insurance Nurse Specialist at William Russell
“A serious illness can turn life upside down in an instant. Critical illness insurance provides a financial safety net, so you can focus on recovery instead of worrying about expenses. It’s about peace of mind—knowing you and your family are protected when it matters most.”
